The Space Between

$395.00

Standing at Point Lonsdale and looking across the water towards Point Nepean, I’m always struck by how close the other side actually is. Only around 3.5 kilometres separates the two shores, yet as I’m standing there watching the water move through, it can feel incredibly vast.

I wanted this painting to explore that space in between. The rushing water, the movement of the coastal bush and the clouds drifting overhead all seem to exaggerate the distance, creating this feeling of being very small within the landscape despite the other side being so close.

Movement became an important part of how I painted this memory. I used loose, expressive brushstrokes to capture the way my eye moves across the landscape: following the water, the swaying bush and the shifting shapes in the sky. Trying to capture those fleeting little moments of ‘is this real?’ when everything feels especially alive.

For me, places like this are somewhere to reset and let go of everything else for a while. There’s something humbling about standing beside such a huge body of moving water and something comforting in being reminded that I'm only a very small part of it.

This painting is about a place I return to when I want to feel a little more like myself.
