She Grows Wild is an original figurative oil painting exploring femininity, nature and our connection to the landscape. A female figure emerges from a dark, luminous field of layered greens, blues and earthy colour, blurring the boundary between body and landscape.
This painting began as my very first study in oils. Years later, while reading If Women Rose Rooted by Sharon Blackie, I found myself thinking about mythological women and their deep connection to the natural world.
I returned to the original painting and began reworking the background, imagining the figure slowly emerging from the earth around her. Less a traditional portrait and more an exploration of belonging, femininity and our relationship with nature, seasons and transformation.
There’s something beautiful to me about allowing a painting to grow alongside its artist. Sometimes a work isn't finished because we haven't yet become the artist it was waiting for.
